Artist Statement

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, and now based in Fremantle, Western Australia, Pete Ross investigates the precarious intersection of human agency and ecological collapse. His practice serves as a forensic examination of the Anthropocene, utilizing art as a critical response to the profound futility of human hubris and the systemic irrationality with which we confront global crises.

His oeuvre is characterised by a compelling portrayal of the interconnectedness between human actions and the delicate balance of nature. Through thematic series such as Functional Extinction or his sculptural investigations such as Ozymandias, Ross explores the architecture of loss, documenting the silent erasure of species and the inevitable decay of human intervention. 

His practice functions as a mirror to a collective failure of stewardship, confronting the viewer with the gap between our awareness of planetary fragility and our continued trajectory of destruction.

Operating under a philosophy of conceptual primacy, Ross utilizes painting, sculpture, and digital media not as separate disciplines, but as tools determined by the specific demands of the idea. The medium is always dictated by the narrative necessity of the concept.
